Welcome to the Currumbin Crew Pod, led by Siren Carly. We are based in Currumbin but don’t fret if you can’t make it to the Southern end of the Gold Coast as there will be opportunities to explore many of the different waterways on the Gold Coast!
About me: I grew up on the Gold Coast, and was definitely a tomboy, keeping up with my older brother and our two best mates who were brothers. We fished our local lakes, canals, beaches and as I was older, local dams, and estuaries. It was a common sight to see the four of us peddling our BMX’s — balancing our rods, tackle boxes and arguing over who carried the smelly bait — to wherever we were heading that day.
Fishing has continuously drawn me back, as there is always something new to learn. It gives me time in nature, and every day is different. I spend a lot of time targeting pest species and educating others about the importance that recreational fishing plays in reducing their numbers (and as a matter of fact, my youngest daughter has caught the fishing bug by winning her first two pest fishing comps! She now regularly out-fishes me!).
I love freshwater fishing, but happily investigate any body of water that looks ‘fishy’… and while I don’t consider myself a “gun”, the curiosity of learning and the enthusiasm to introduce and support building skills is something I definitely aim to incorporate into my Pod meets.
I have a background in Environmental Science and Criminology, and have been a long time advocate of disability and inclusion for all. So you can be assured of a truly inclusive and safe space with this Pod!
