What’s a Crew Pod?
A Crew Pod is WRFL’s answer to the question,
“Who do I fish with — and how do I learn without feeling lost?”
Think of it as a friendly, local huddle where curiosity turns into confident casts.
In a nutshell:
A Pod is a small circle of 8–30 people, led by a trained Siren (volunteer leader), who meet once a month to share skills, swap stories … and simply enjoy being on — or beside— the water together.
Why we created CrewPods
- Belonging beats bravado – learning is easier when you recognise faces and feel safe to ask “silly” questions (no such thing, BTW!).
- Micro beats mega – small groups mean flexible venues (jetty, park, creek bank) and zero red‑tape event costs.
- Local impact – Pods adopt their own patch of waterway, picking up litter and modelling best‑practice release techniques.

What happens at a Pod meet‑up?
A quick SKILLS BITE
Think “Knot Ninja”, or “Accuracy Casting”. Perhaps your Siren will select “Weather Whisperers” this month, or one of the many other activities (if the Pod hasn’t request something else). Regardless, you can be sure of learning and sharing new skills.
Fishing Time
60‑90 minutes of relaxed wet‑line fun, at every meet-up that allows.
Pot‑luck Feast
Share a snag, salad — or whatever feast your Pod collectively cook up — and a thermos cuppa while swapping tips.
Celebration & Socials-Selfie
Cheer every “first fish,” capture the moment, and log any catches individually if you’re a Competing Member of WRFL… with photos shared on the socials 😉
What it costs
Nothing but enthusiasm.
Bring your own snacks and, if you have it, a spare rod to lend. Newcomers often start with loan gear until they decide what suits them.
Not a WRFL member yet? We simply ask for a gold coin donation to help cover incidentals — but your smile’s still the real ticket in.
How CrewPods fit the bigger picture
- First step after joining a State Facebook group.
- Support and friendship make starting the fishing adventure less daunting.
- Gateway to XFactor woMENTORnaments and the League Ladder Women’s Sprints when you feel ready to compete.
- Gives all women the opportunity to contribute and be valued in our sport.
- Takes our tribe offline.
Ready to join — or start — one?
Look for a Pod announcement in your State Chapter Facebook group or message WRFL to connect with the nearest Siren.
NO POD NEARBY?
If there isn’t a Pod near you yet, why not become the Siren who starts one?
We’ll give you the toolkit, social badge, connections with other Sirens, and all the backup you need.
The Siren’s role
Your Siren is the organiser, safety champion and cheer‑squad captain.
She:
- Chooses the meet venue and date (with your input).
- Demonstrates one new skill each month.
- Makes sure kids stay under their parents’ eye and everyone follows local rules.
- Keeps our whole community updated with inspiring stories from the Pod.
- Files a two‑minute online report so WRFL can see the ripple effect.
$25/year goes a long way to empowering female fishers into the future. Plus, WRFL Members enjoy exclusive benefits!
Pre-authorisation of payment (here) is the FIRST STEP in your application to join the WRFL Member Group. Your Application Form will follow this step. 🙂
